Keystone Plants ~ Keystone Species

What are Keystone Plants?

Keystone plants that are native provide a vital  source of food and/or shelter for a large number of other species.   They are also host plants to a number of our invertebrates that support the larvae stage,  such as the Monarch butterfly.  Our native plants play a crucial role as the cornerstone of our natural plant heritage.

 The Heavy Lifters

There are native plant species that are the heavy lifters of the natural world.  These would be the trees and shrubs, such as oaks, willows, cherry trees and fruit bearing shrubs.  Together with native wildflowers and forbs, their contribution to the natural world is critical to all ecosystems.  Without their support it would cause a cascade of negative impacts of our natural world.

Bumblebees as a Keystone Species

Bumblebees that are in most of our native terrestrial ecosystems are there to ensure the reproduction of countless  plants, both native and those that are in our garden.  This is crucial  for  producing the seeds and fruits that nourish the natural world and ourselves.
